About the writer:
Cameron Maxwell was born in January 1987, in Upper Hutt, New Zealand. He is the son of a Californian home-builder and Kiwi family attorney, who homesteaded a life together in Northwest Montana. His parents had high hopes that he would be the First Baby of the New Year in ‘87, but characteristically, he was 10 days late, arriving on January the 11th.
Cameron was raised in the Flathead Valley, where he came of age until leaving for college at 18. He earned a Bachelor’s in American History at Bates College, and an MA in English & Theater Education at NYU Steinhardt. He has lived in New York City since beginning his course of study at Steinhardt in 2010, apartment-hopping from Brooklyn to Harlem and back again. Since the completion of his degree requirements in 2012, he has worked as an English, Theater, Media Production, and Creative Writing teacher for the NYC Department of Education.
He currently lives in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, with his beloved, Carla Ramírez Maxwell. When the school schedule allows, he can be found spending time with Carla’s people in Connecticut and Florida, or his own in Montana. He enjoys writing and photography in his spare time, and hopes to someday repatriate and raise a family in New Zealand with Carla.
About the Substack:
"Hoedown of the Vanities" is a record of the passions, thoughts, beliefs, and enthusiasms of a foolish 38-year-old Brooklyn man - as told through short fiction, essays, and chapter excerpts from longer writing projects. Through this collection of hit-or-miss insights, questionable prose, and cringey takes, the writer hopes to have fun - and hopes that sense of fun is contagious.
